Botulinum injections, medically known as Botulinum toxins are neurotoxins that are used by healthcare providers to smooth wrinkles, prevent migraines and help in other health problems. Botulinum toxins are also used in cosmetic and medical procedures in a lab by technicians.
Botulinum toxins work by causing muscle paralysis. A bacterium called Clostridium botulinum manufactures the neurotoxin. Injections to be used for medical or cosmetic reasons are made by healthcare providers using a variant of the bacteria called type A.
Although the toxin is known to paralyze the muscles of the face, physicians strive to inject the minimal amount to allow the patients to relax the muscles.
Women who are breast-feeding, pregnant or planning to get pregnant are recommended to consult their physicians before going for the injections.

How do botulinum injections work?
Wrinkles are caused by repeated muscle contractions and this toxin temporarily block nerve signals to the muscles. Thus the muscles cannot contract as they become weak or paralyzed. The relaxed muscles give a look of fullness of face making the skin look wrinkle-free.
Procedure of Botulinum injection:
It is an out-procedure during which the healthcare provider uses a fine needle to inject small amounts of botulinum toxins into the various treatment areas, as required. Injections may sting and feel uncomfortable, but doctors may provide a local anesthesia to the skin before giving injections.
Typically, injections are given in four to five areas. For example, areas on each side of the forehead are selected and injections are given. Two to three areas on either eye areas are also injected. Depending on the type and place of wrinkles, the injections are given at various points.
